Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we also produce a Signature Decaf Masala Chai, which uses the same eight-spice blend with a decaffeinated base. It's one of the very few decaf loose leaf masala chai options available in the UK, making it ideal for evenings, pregnancy, or anyone sensitive to caffeine.

Add one heaped teaspoon per cup to a small saucepan with cold water and whole milk or a milk of your choice (roughly 50/50). Bring to a simmer, allow to bubble gently for 3–5 minutes, then strain into your cup. Add sugar or jaggery to taste. The longer you simmer, the richer and more spiced the flavour becomes.

Most supermarket chai tea bags use pre-ground spice dust and low-grade tea. the flavour fades fast and the spice profile is flat. Chai latte syrups are sugar-heavy and bear little resemblance to traditional Indian masala chai. The Real Chai Company's blend uses whole crushed spices and loose Assam CTC, brewed on the hob with milk in the authentic South Asian style, delivering a genuinely layered, aromatic cup.

You can brew it with water only, but masala chai is traditionally made with milk, it softens the tannins in the Assam tea and brings out the warmth of the spices, particularly the cardamom and cinnamon. For a dairy-free version, oat milk or full-fat coconut milk work beautifully.

We recommend brewing on the hob in a saucepan for the most authentic result, the gentle simmer is key to activating the whole spices. That said, you can steep in a teapot with boiling water for a lighter, more tea-forward brew. Always use a tea strainer when pouring.

Each bag yields approximately 45-50 cups depending on how strong you brew it. At roughly £0.37 per cup, it's a far more cost-effective (and authentic) alternative to coffee shop chai lattes.

Masala Chai contains eight hand-balanced whole spices: cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, black pepper, nutmeg, lemongrass, and mint, blended with bold Assam CTC loose leaf tea. Each spice is lightly toasted and crushed before blending to release maximum aroma and flavour.

We use single-origin Assam CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) black tea, a bold, malty base grown in the Assam region of India, traditionally used in authentic Indian chai. It holds up beautifully to milk and spice, giving you the strong, layered cup that masala chai is known for.

Yes. Unlike powdered chai mixes or syruped chai lattes, the Signature Masala Chai uses real whole spices that are lightly toasted and hand-crushed in small batches. This preserves the essential oils in each spice, which is what gives traditional Indian chai its depth, warmth, and unmistakable aroma.

The Real Chai Company was founded by Vimal and Vaishali, a British-South Asian couple whose love of authentic masala chai inspired the brand. The recipes are rooted in traditional Indian chai-making, whole spices, loose leaf Assam, hob-brewed with milk, adapted for UK kitchens without compromising on authenticity or flavour.

Yes. The Signature Masala Chai is a dry spice and loose leaf tea blend, entirely plant-based and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. Dairy is not added to the blend itself; milk is added at the brewing stage, where you can choose any milk you prefer.

The Signature Masala Chai is priced at £18.99 per bag, which yields approximately 45–50 cups. That works out at under 60p per cup, a genuinely premium chai experience at a fraction of the café price.
